Hello Everyone,
How do I open a password-protected pdf using Skim?
I'm not trying to crack it, I just need to insert the password that I own, but Skim simply doesn't prompt for the password or has any option to insert it.

Thanks,
Filipe

When the file IS password protected (and the password is not the empty string), then you should get a read view with a password text field. You can also set the password through File > Password…. If you don't get the red view, and the Password… menu item is disabled, the file is not password protected, or the password was the empty string, or you already entered it before and Skim saved it in your Keychain.

The password isn't the empty string, i don't get the a read view to insert the password, the File > Password menu is disabled, and i haven't successfuly open this file.
It is from a college web page. The teacher gave us the password and my colleagues (i believe using Windows) have opened the file with no problems (i don't know using which program).

All i get when I open the file is "The document could not be open". The only explanation i get is that the file might be corrupt, but there are several password-protected files I can't open, all from the same Teacher, and other people have opened them.

easier or more difficult to achieve? Read this whitepaper to separate the
two and get a better understanding.

Well, then the PDF could not be opened for some reason, but not because of the password. My guess is that you'd have the same problem with Preview, which makes it a PDFKit problem, so out of our reach.

In this case I would try Acrobat Reader. If it is indeed pdfKit related, using Adobe's software should do it. Since your colleagues were able to open it my guess is they used AR since this seems to be the only pdf reader many people have ever heard of.
