Discussion:
[Skim-app-users] Memory leak?

Hi,

I’m running Skim Version 1.4.16 (90) on Mac OS X Version 10.11.2 (15C50).

I wonder whether anyone else has seen this behaviour: Skim is using a huge amount of RAM. According to Activity Monitor, Skim is using

Skim | 13.42 GB | 7.49 GB | 11 | 283

in the notation

App | Memory | Compressed Memory | Threads | Ports

In fact, the system ran out of application memory yesterday and I think it was due to Skim. (It was one of two apps which were not responding.)

I’ve gone back to 1.4.15 (89) for now.

Cheers,
José

There’s certainly no leak introduced in the last release.

Okay, then I will re-install the latest version and keep track of the memory to see what’s going on. I don’t understand how the process, which was not that old, could have gotten to 13GB of memory, though.

Cheers,
José

BTW, it does seem like more people are seeing this. Moreover, it is also seen in Preview. That means, as I would expect if it’s really there, that it’s a bug in PDFKit in ElCap (one of many serious bugs, unfortunately). I’ve reported this to Apple, but given how (non) responsive they are on the even more obvious and visible (and simpler to fix!) bugs, I don’t expect them to fix this before 10.12.

I recently also came across this issue. Skim reached 27 GB Memory
yesterday when it became unresponsive.
And Preview behaves the same when I open a large number of PDFs so it's
most definitely a PDFKit issue. Was there any response from Apple on this?
I did have a large number of PDFs open, true, but I've never had an issue
before. I'm attaching a sample I took after Skim became unresponsive just
in case that could be of interest.

Apple typically will not respond to such as this, at least until they have addressed the problem, and even then, the fix may be let into the wild with no fanfare.

I have filed a bug report, but more could help. Also, bug reports from the outside may be closed as a duplicate of an internal report once they start looking at the issue for real. This lets them deal with it internally without creating a public discussion, for many good reasons.

Thanks for the sample, but I think Apple will want samples (and other data) from those who report, since that keeps the reports cleaner.

Thanks Justin!

Would you mind posting a link to where I should file the bug report?

BTW, I've kept an eye on memory use today and it seems that it increases
with every PDF that I open and when I search for a term, and even when
closing PDFs memory is not given back. Currently I'm back at 5GB ...

Try <http://bugreporter.apple.com>. You need an Apple ID, and perhaps need to be signed up as a developer (which is free).

Although others may have reported this, more can't hurt. And remember, "Just the facts, ma'am".

I filed a bug report with Apple, but they have not responded to it. My guess is that they will fix this in 10.12. (Given their past behavior, fixing this in 10.11.x is very unlikely).
