[Skim-app-users] Hyperlinks in Skim Are Inactive; Can't Activate...

I just started using Skim and am impressed with what I will be able to do.

BUT, using Skim, the hyperlinks in my pdf docs are inactive. "Help" says I
should be able to "View" an "Inspector" to make them active, but it is not a
View option.

I have the latest version.

Generally, links work. Why it would not work in your particular case I really cannot say without seeing it or more detailed information.

You also don't see anything after hovering over the links?

Hi, Christiaan. I replied to your email and attached the pdf doc wherein the
links do not work opening with Skim. But, the doc made my email too large,
and it is being reviewed.

I'll find a smaller one and send it.

Bob

Thanks for getting back to me, Christiaan. Re your questions:

1- When I hover over a link, it does display the URL, but I've found no
action I can take (click, double click, right click, etc.) that opens that
webpage.

2- Sorry about the "Help" error. When I launched Skim "Help," and searched
on "hyperlink," it also displayed results for iWeb. I mistakenly thought
that was part of Skim. I now see that it is not.

I've attached the document. If you open it using Adobe or even Preview, all
the links work. But, not opening with Skim. - at least for me. Seems
something is amiss here.

PS: Although the file was designated to open using Skim, for some reason it
shows the Adobe icon.

FWIW, I see no problems with your example, using Mac OS X, 10.6.8 and Skim Version 1.3.20 (71). All three links open w/o problems.

All those links work fine for me on 10.7.3.

Maybe that's the problem, Justin. I'm on Lion, OS 10.7.3. And, I have the
same version of Skim.

That's the only explanation I can think of now.

I just tried this on 10.7.1, and it worked w/o problems. Could be an issue in the later releases of 10.7, but I can't check that here.

As I said, I'm on 10.7.3. Might you be able to "alert" the developers? I'd
like to use Skim, but if I lose hyperlinks, then I can't.

Bob
10.7.3 should not work differently from 10.7.1, especially on such a basic thing. Links are basically handled by PDFKit.

The only thing I can think of, again, is that you're in the wrong tool mode.

I was attempting to activate a link using the "Select" pointer, which made
sense to me. It is the "Text" tool that works.

Problem solved, although logically it seems it should be the Select tool,
since activating a hyperlink is "selecting" it. Maybe an addition to the
FAQs:

"How do I click on a hyperlink to go to webpage"? A. Use the "Text" tool.

Uhm no, the Select tool selects areas. Moreover, I don't see how clicking a link is selecting, then you could call almost anything selecting (quite frankly the Text tool is more about selecting, as you can select text).

Also, the cursor should give you a strong hint.

Good point. And, the text tool does turn into a finger pointer when placed
