When I open any passworded PDF the background color of the document is the same as the window background, which can make the document difficult to read if you’re using a gray window background. If I open the display preferences and tweak the window background color even a tiny bit, the document background pops to white (now distinguishable from the window background) and everything is fine. On reopening the same or another passworded document the same events occur. No problem with non-passworded documents. Preview works fine in this respect.

Are you talking about the page background color?

First of all, we have changed absolutely nothing related to any background color.

Second, we are not involved in drawing any background color (unless you use a hidden pref), that is 100% Apple. It's also Apple that handles the password input and the unlocking.

Third, I see no problem here with password protected documents.
